From bustling tea auctions in Colombo to boutique cafés in Europe and lively markets in Africa, Empire Teas has built a reputation that travels far beyond Sri Lanka’s shores.
“Our passion for tea shapes every blend,” says Founder & Managing Director Lushantha de Silva. “Whether it’s Hyson in Russia, Thurson in Europe, Tea Avenue in Colombo, or Akina in Africa, each brand redefines how the world experiences tea. But this journey is never just ours. It belongs to our partners as much as it belongs to us.”
Partnership is a recurring theme among those who work with Empire. Judith from Germany praises the company’s “tailor-made solutions” for his diverse clientele. “My customers come from many countries with varied flavour preferences. Empire always matches their needs and helps me keep them satisfied.”

In Spain, a new chapter is about to be written. “We will be starting a new venture in Spain with Empire Teas and have great plans to offer consumers great tea,” shares Jaime, the Chairman of Empire Spain.
Meanwhile, in Shanghai, Laury speaks with pride about introducing great Ceylon and African teas to the Chinese market, teas that carry the Empire’s signature of quality.
With its fully owned subsidiary, Empire Kenya, already making strides in East Africa, the company is set to blend tradition with innovation, ensuring that the flavour of Ceylon tea continues to be savoured in every corner of the globe.
This year, Empire Teas celebrated its 25th anniversary with festivities as vibrant as the tea leaves that have shaped its story. What began with a small, passionate team and an unwavering belief in the purity of Ceylon tea has grown into a name trusted in over 70 countries. And this milestone was more than a number. It was a tribute to every hand, heart, and voice that has been part of the journey.

The celebrations began where Empire’s heart beats strongest, among its dedicated staff. The atmosphere brimmed with warmth, gratitude, and camaraderie, honouring the skill, passion, and loyalty that have powered every success.
From there, Colombo opened its arms to distinguished guests from around the world, each greeted with a Sri Lankan welcome steeped in tradition. The days were rich with moments, guided visits to the head office, blending and packaging facilities, and quiet conversations with the teams who bring each cup of tea to life.
Beyond the boardroom, guests wandered through the emerald sweep of tea plantations, the cobbled charm of Galle Fort, and the heartbeat of the island’s heritage in the rhythms of drummers, the swirl of dancers, and the timeless beauty of cultural performances.
The celebrations reached their crescendo with a grand Gala Dinner, a night woven with laughter, stories, and shared pride. It wasn’t just about marking 25 years in business. It was about honouring enduring partnerships, mutual trust, and friendships steeped, like the finest tea, to perfection over time.
